Conegliano is rich in cultural and wine-and-food traditions, as well as in cultural events (like Dama Castellana, a show which evokes the middle ages with vintage costumes parade along city roads and a draughts competition played with human pieces; or Antenna Cinema, an important film festival). Rich are also Conegliano history and its medieval traces, symbolized by the castle that dominates the city.
The fame of the city is strongly linked to DOC Prosecco wine and to grappa (grapefruit peel distillate), to which a lot of events are dedicated. In the nearby you can visit: Treviso, heart of a territori defined as marca gioiosa et amorosa (joyful and romantic county), where important art exhibitions take place (Monet, Van Gogh); Asolo, beloved by poets and artists; Possagno, birthplace of the sculptor Antonio Canova, where the museum of his masterpieces plastic figures is sited; Susegana and its castle; Follina and its abbey; Castelfranco Veneto, birthplace of the painter Giorgione; Venice, only 40km far away. The surrounding area, elected in the past by venetian nobles for their summer residence, is carachterized with many sumptuous villas.
Hystorical itineraries
The territory of Treviso was part of Austrian Empire until 1918. That's why it preserves vivid memories of First World War. In particular, Vittorio Veneto, Bassano del Grappa e all the cities along Piave river are marked with the traces of battles (museums, monuments, rests of military posts in the battlefields).
Wine and food itineraries
Conegliano, together with Valdobbiadene, is the motherland of Prosecco, one of the most famous and appreciated italian sparkling wines. The hills where this precious grapevine grows, described as a land where vineyards will eternally blossom, where the shady plants give restoration and protection, is a luxuriant area studded with wineries, where the wine making art have been handed down for centuries, and with picturesque osterie (local rustic wine bars), which preserve the taste of good things of old times.
The territory is also famous for the production of grappa (grapefruit peel distillate) and red-wine. There are some itineraries (wine routes) which were designed to make people dicover the wineries, learn production processes and have tasting.
A lot of events and fests are dedicated to Prosecco and grappa, like Primavera del Prosecco (Spring of Prosecco), Cantine Aperte (Open Caves) and Mondo Grappa (Grappa World), which takes place at Conegliano every year.
As far as food is concerned, the province of Treviso offers different CE certified products like the Radicchio Rosso di Treviso e Variegato di Castelfranco (red and streaked chicory), white asparagus of Cimadolmo, Casatella Trevigiana (tender cheese) and many other excellent products (cheese, mushrooms, river fish, aromatic herbs), which are the main ingredients of a cuisine that links in an unusual way mountains and sea cooking traditions of mountains and see.
